Forest Fires in Southern Europe - 2000

The forest fire season 2000 in the Southern Member States was characterised by an important loss of human lives and environmental damage. During the last two decades, the wooded area of the Community affected by fires represents more than ten million hectares. Since 1994 the burnt area in the Southern Member States is declining and since then the yearly average amounts to about 280 000 ha. The annual EFFIS report tell about the past global wildfire season.
