We are looking for a highly experienced Fire Research Scientist, who is excited to lead innovative research and technology development to support Scion's Rural Fire Research Programme. In this role you will develop and lead innovative research on fire behaviour, fire danger rating, fire weather and climatology, fuel modelling, and risk management.


Key accountabilities:

  • Project leader for key Wildfire Programmes and other key fire research projects.
  • Liaison with fire industry representatives and key stakeholders.
  • Experienced and great understanding of operational wildfire management enabling active promotion of technology transfer/knowledge exchange to fire fighters and fire managers.


To be successful in this role, your skills and experience will include:

  • A Masters or PhD degree in Forestry, Environmental Science or similar, with relevant research or work experience, including 5 years or greater experience in fire science, fire operations (including firefighting unit standards) or broader risk management. experience in project & risk management, diagnostic & analytical interpretation and research methodology is highly desirable.
  • Understanding of scientific method, and appreciation of the role of science and technology in developing solutions for industry.
  • Experience in field and laboratory-based sampling, data collection and analysis. Operational experience in fire management and/or fire research is essential.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of vegetation fuel types, fire weather & climate, Fire Danger Rating Systems, fire behaviour models and tools. Knowledge of rural fire risk and management practices in New Zealand context preferred.
